Interstitial atom

Definitie

  • 1. An interstitial defect is a type of point crystallographic defect where an atom of the same or of a different type, occupies an interstitial site in the crystal structure. When the atom is of the same type as those already present they are known as a self-interstitial defect. (Wikipedia). 2.An interstitial, or self-interstitial, atom is an extra atom in a crystal that is present in the space in between four regularly placed atoms in the structure. (ScienceDirect, Introductory Biomaterials, 2022). 3. Thermal vibrations may cause an atom to leave its original crystal site and move into a nearby interstitial site, creating a vacancy-interstitial pair. Vacancies and interstitials are the types of defects found in a pure crystal. (Britannica)
