Definition
- 1. A monolayer is a single, closely packed layer of entities, commonly atoms or molecules.[1] Monolayers can also be made out of cells. Self-assembled monolayers form spontaneously on surfaces. Monolayers of layered crystals like graphene and molybdenum disulfide are generally called 2D materials. (Wikipedia). 2. A single, closely packed layer of atoms or molecules. The term floating monolayer is used for certain spread monolayers or films which are in the condensed — often solid — state. (IUPAC). 3. A single continuous layer or film that is one cell, molecule, or atom in thickness (Meriam-Webster)
