- 1. Luminescence arising from photoexcitation. (Ontobee, Physico-chemical process ). 2. Emission of light from a substance as a result of absorption of electromagnetic radiation; such a substance is called a phosphor (q.v.), and the emitted light usually has a longer wavelength than the incident radiation. (Brittanica). 3. Photoluminescence is a process in which a molecule absorbs a photon in the visible region, exciting one of its electrons to a higher electronic excited state, and then radiates a photon as the electron returns to a lower energy state.
