Fracture thoughness

1. Fracture toughness is defined as the stress-intensity factor at a critical point where crack propagation becomes rapid. It is given the symbol KIc and is measured in units of megapascals times the square root of the distance measured in metres (MPaSquare root of√m). (Britannica). 2. The fracture toughness of a material measures the ability of that material to resist the extension of a pre-existing crack by a specified type of stress. (Science direct, Interface Science and Technology Volume 18, 2011, Pages 253-331). 3. In materials science, fracture toughness is the critical stress intensity factor of a sharp crack where propagation of the crack suddenly becomes rapid and unlimited. (Wikipedia). 4. Fracture toughness is an indication of the amount of stress required to propagate a preexisting flaw . It is a very important material property since the occurrence of flaws is not completely avoidable in the processing, fabrication, or service of a material/component. (Iowa State University)
