Photoluminescence

Definition

  • 1. Luminescence arising from photoexcitation. (Ontobee, Physico-chemical process ). 2. Emission of light from a substance as a result of absorption of electromagnetic radiation; such a substance is called a phosphor (q.v.), and the emitted light usually has a longer wavelength than the incident radiation. (Brittanica). 3. Photoluminescence is a process in which a molecule absorbs a photon in the visible region, exciting one of its electrons to a higher electronic excited state, and then radiates a photon as the electron returns to a lower energy state. (Progress in Materials Science Volume 83, October 2016, Pages 472-535). 4. Photoluminescence (abbreviated as PL) is light emission from any form of matter after the absorption of photons (electromagnetic radiation). (Wikipedia)
