Atom
Definition
- 1. Smallest particle still characterizing a chemical element. It consists of a nucleus of a positive charge ( is the proton number and the elementary charge) carrying almost all its mass (more than 99.9%) and electrons determining its size. (IUPAC). 2. A chemical entity constituting the smallest component of an element having the chemical properties of the element. (Ontobee, ChEBI ontology). 3. An atom is composed of a core of protons and/or neutrons which may be surrounded by a cloud of electrons. (Ontobee, Semanticscience Integrated Ontology). 4. An 'atom' is a 'nucleus' surrounded by an 'electron_cloud', i.e. a quantum system made of one or more bounded electrons. (EMMO). 5. Atoms can join together to form molecules, which make up most objects. Different elements (e.g. oxygen, carbon, uranium) are made up of different types of atoms. An atom is the smallest unit of an element that will behave as that element. (https://www.arpansa.gov.au)
