- 1. A fiat object part that is in gaseous phase and that is the outer layer of an object in space and is held to the object by gravitational force Annotations. The entire mass of air surrounding the earth which is composed largely of nitrogen, oxygen, water vapour, clouds (liquid or solid water), carbon dioxide, together with trace gases and aerosols.
